Annual Conservation Status Report Workshop in Kampala

In January 2016, GVTC convened a two-day workshop in Entebbe (Uganda) on the development of key indicators to measure improvement within conservation of the Greater Virunga Landscape (GVL) where some indicators have been developed and the Technical Working Group (TWG) was established to spearhead the data collection, storage and analysis of information generation. It is in this regard that a second meeting was organized by GVTC from the 19th to the 20th April, in Kampala (Uganda) for experts organized through the Technical Working Group (TWG) to review a draft of the Terms of Reference (TdRs) for the Annual Conservation Status Report, set up a road map and draw an implementation plan. Those experts are from national conservation organizations within the partner states (DRC, Rwanda & Uganda), mainly Institute Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature (ICCN), Rwanda Development Board (RDB) & Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA); International Gorilla Conservation Program (IGCP); Institute of Tropical Forest Conservation (ITFC, Uganda); Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS, Uganda), the Netherlands Embassy in Kampala as well as the Greater Virunga Transboundary Collaboration(GVTC).
The key facilitator of this workshop was Dr Katherine Warner, the Regional Environment & Climate Change Advisor to the Netherlands Embassy, in Kampala, who has been also the key facilitator of the Theory of Change workshop organized by GVTC in January 2015.
The opening remarks were given by Mr. Fidele Ruzigandekwe, Executive Secretary Deputy in charge of Programs at GVTC, while the closing remarks were presented by Mrs. Susan Namuli, the Monitoring and Evaluation Manager at UWA.
The Program Manager of GVTC, Mr. James Byamukama, presented a brief introduction to the participants, pointing out the background of ACSR and its importance, the need of Technical Working Group and its Terms of reference. Then Dr Catherine Warner presented the review of indicators, the source of data and the methods for data collection. Finally Dr Warner gave an overview of ACSR format before giving the floor to participants for a discussion which covered the roles and responsibilities of the task force in the report writing. It should be noticed that participants found “Technical Working Group” more suitable than “Task force “and the next workshops and initiatives on conservation improvement indicators will be focused more on the former than the latter.
