European Union Workshop on Wildlife Support in the Horn of Africa, Eastern and Southern Africa Region.

On Friday 13 November 2015, the Greater Virunga Transboundary Collaboration (GVTC) was represented by Mr. James Byamuka, the GVTC Programs Manager, at the Regional Wildlife Stakeholders’ workshop held at Heron Portico Hotel, in Nairobi. The purpose of this workshop organized by the European Union through its Delegation to the Republic of Kenya was to provide feedback on the interventions being proposed for support by the European Union under its Regional Indicative Programme for the Horn of Africa, Eastern and Southern Africa Region.

Indeed, the European Union’s 11th European Development Fund Regional Indicative Programme (2014-2020) allocates EUR 30 million towards achieving two specific objectives for the wildlife sub-sector in the EAC, IGAD and SADC Regions: a) strengthened Trans-frontier Conservation Area (TFCA) management (EUR 20m); and b) improved law enforcement on wildlife crime (EUR 10m). EU appointed a team of consultants to put up a proposal for this funding. The team of consultants has gathered ideas through consultations with key stakeholders and other methods to come up with a concept that covered the challenges and emerging solutions. According to Mr. James Byamukama who participated in this strategic workshop, the purpose of the Workshop was bring stakeholders together and contribute to the insights as well as input in the identification, assessment of feasibility and formulation of the actions ultimately to be supported in these two priority areas. The participation of GVTC in this workshop came in timely as it is looking for sustainable funds to its improved conservation of Greater Virunga Landscape programme. This workshop therefore turned in as an opportunity to fill in the sustainable funding outcome of the GVTC success plan.
