GVTC mission in Nyungwe National Park with Ugandan Parliament Committee in Charge of Trade and Tourism

On the 23rd March 2017, at Top Hill View Hotel, near Nyungwe National Park of Rwanda, a delegation from GVTC and Members of Parliament of Uganda, in charge of Trade and Tourism had a meeting to share with them the GVTC background, mandate, achievements as well as challenges including the ratification of the Treaty. The meeting aimed also at requesting those Ugandan Parliaments in charge of Trade and Tourism to support the ratification of the GVTC Treaty signed on the 30th October 2015.
The GVTC delegation consisted of three persons, namely Dr Georges Muamba Tshibasu, Executive Secretary; Mrs. Grace Kyomuhendo Byaruhanga, Deputy Executive Secretary in charge of Finance & Administration, and Juvenal Mukeshimana, Executive Secretary Assistant.
During the meeting, the Executive Secretary shared with the Ugandan delegation members the background of GVTC, from its informal birth on the grassroots level by the park rangers. Dr Georges Muamba Tshibasu pointed out that the GVTC’ s birth was an initiative which was taken up by the National Conservation Institutions of the three countries of Institut Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature(ICCN) in the Democratic Republic of Congo; the Rwanda Development Board(RDB), in Rwanda; and the Uganda Wildlife Authority(UWA), in Uganda. Moreover, this initiative has been formalized by the commitment of those State members by signing the GVTC treaty on the 30th October 2015. Given that the treaty has to be ratified by the members of Parliaments of the three countries, the GVTC Executive Secretary requested his Ugandan guests to support the process of ratification of such an important treaty which will reinforce GVTC mandate and objectives for the welfare of natural resources conservation, and the development of the populations living alongside the protected areas and within the Greater Virunga Landscape.
At the end of those fruitful talks, the Chairperson of the Ugandan Parliament Committee in charge of Trade and Tourism, Hon. Alex Ruhunda, recognized the good work that is being done by GVTC, and together with his colleagues, committed to support GVTC and make a follow up on this GVTC treaty ratification process in Uganda.
This is more relevant since it is not appreciate to abandon conservation in the hands of donors alone, but the concerned States should make a signification contribution to protect and conserve their natural resources within their parks.
