GVTC Strategic meetings with Ugandan Key Partners for the Treaty Signing

JPEG - 31.4 kb

On the 6th March 2015, a GVTC delegation met with GVTC key-partners in Kampala (Uganda) to consolidate the collaboration between these partners and the GVTC. Dr Georges Muamba Tshibasu, the Executive Secretary of GVTC, Ms Grace Kyomuhendo, the Deputy Executive for Finance & Administration, and Vincent Mukwege, the Communications Officer were the members of the GVTC delegation attending these important meetings with partners.
The first meeting was held with WWF authorities who are highly involved in conservation programs in Uganda and other neighboring countries in the Greater Virunga Landscape. Mr. Norman Rigava, the Coordinator of Africa Rift Lakes Program and Mr. Thomas Otim, the Forest & Biodiversity Coordinator at WWF explained to GVTC delegates the on-going activities in the landscape of Serengeti and the Greater Virunga. GVTC delegates were informed that WWF is currently implementing conservation programs focused on protected areas management, forest resources management as well as water resource management.

The second meeting took place at UWA (Uganda Wildlife Authority) office where Dr Andre Seguya, the UWA Executive Director welcomed the GVTC delegation. The Executive Secretary of GVTC made a profit of such an opportunity to address specific issues related to the GVTC Treaty signing in Kigali and requested more collaboration from UWA to have the Treaty signed by the end of March 2015. The Protected Areas Authorities from the three countries of the Greater Virunga Landscape (Uganda, Rwanda & DRC) are among the key actors of this treaty aimed at reinforcing the legal personality of this intergovernmental institution. Dr Andrew Seguya has accepted to provide GVTC with necessary support in terms of advocacy and mobilization for the GVTC treaty signing before leading the UWA delegation for this crucial ceremony in Kigali by the 20th March 2015.

The third and last meeting was held at the Ugandan Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities where the GVTC delegation has been received by Mr James Lutalo, the Director of Tourism Department. GVTC has reiterated the wish of welcoming the Ugandan ministry delegation among those intergovernmental authorities designated for the treaty signing. It should be noticed that Rwandan and Congolese authorities have confirmed their participation in that regional forum of great interest for conservation and transboundary collaboration. For their part, Ugandan authorities are working hard not to miss the GVTC treaty signing meeting as they have been contributing, as well as their Rwandan and Congolese partners, to the elaboration of that treaty since 2010.
