Workshop to validate research findings on hydrological systems in the Greater Virunga Landscape.

From the 28th to the 29th July 2015, in Rubavu(Rwanda), GVTC organizes a workshop aimed at validating research findings on the hydrological systems in the Greater Virunga Landscape.

This research was sponsored by GVTC thanks to funds from the Kingdom of the Netherlands and was conducted by three research institutions in the three partner states of the Transboundary Collaboration of the Greater Virunga: Institute of Tropical Forest Conservation (ITFC) of Mbarara University, in Uganda; INES-Ruhengeri in Rwanda and the Observatoire Vulcanologique de Goma (OVG) in DRC.

The study consisted of performing a preliminary field survey in order to provide an initial assessment of the hydrological systems in the region; gauging the current state of available information and level of monitoring that is occurring across the landscape; identifying what questions need to be answered in regards of water scarcity in the region and monitoring the water resources as well as suggesting strategic methods to improve both quantity and quality of water that local communities are provided with in the Greater Virunga Landscape.

The findings research validation workshop will be attended by the Protected Areas Authorities from the three partner states (Rwanda, Uganda &DRC), research team members, experts from local governments in charge of water and natural resources management, experts in hydrological systems as well as staff members of the Kingdom of Netherlands Embassy.

The workshop aims at presenting and sharing the research findings among stakeholders from GVTC expects a helpful usage of the research funds for an adaptive management of resources in the Greater Virunga Landscape.

At the end of this validation workshop, there will be an increasing in terms of knowledge and understanding of the hydrological situation in the Greater Virunga Landscape. In addition, GVTC still hopes this workshop increase ownership of the study findings and high potential of the key stakeholders using the study findings for adaptive management of the Greater Virunga Landscape.
