The Council of Ministers of the Greater Virunga Transboundary Collaboration (GVTC) held its 2ndextraordinary meeting atSerena Hotel Kigali, Rwanda on27th November 2018. The meeting was attended by Hon. Hakuziyaremye Soraya, the Minister of Trade and Industry of the Republic of Rwanda and Chairperson of GVTC Council of Ministers,Hon. Kiwanda Godfrey Ssuubi, Minister of State for Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities of the Republic of Uganda and Mr. Patrick Mamboleo ya Pathy who represented H.E Hon. Dr. Amy Ambatobe Nyongolo, the Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
In her address and official opening of the 2nd extraordinary Council session, Hon. Minister of Trade and Industry of the Republic of Rwanda welcomed the other Members of the Council to the meeting and acknowledged the importance of the conservation of shared natural resources.
The Council directed the Secretariat to develop a roadmap for the implementation of Zero Poaching Strategy and to be part of the agenda for the next Council of Ministers. The Council requested the Secretariat to send invitations along with the road map on time to heads of Protected Area institutions to allow them prepare before the meeting is held.
The Council requested the Secretariat to follow up on the different technical and financial commitments expressed by the different institutions that have taken part to the conference and report to the Board and the Council of Ministers. Indeed, the meeting of Council of Ministers was timely held, the day after the Conference for the coalition building of partners able to support the institutional sustainability of GVTC.
In her closing remarks, the Chairperson of the Council of Ministers expressed appreciation for the Secretariat that organized this meeting. Hon. Minister also extended her sincere appreciation to the other members of the Council for their commitment and time to attend the meeting in Kigali and called upon Partner States and other stakeholders to come up with sustainable solutions to the multiple challenges the region is facing.
