On 22nd June 2018, a Delegation from the European Union visited the Greater Virunga Transboundary Collaboration (GVTC). Mr. Pascal Zahonero in charge of the Department of International Aid and Cooperation and Ms. Maria Gonzalez Mata, in charge of Environment Programs and Team Leader for DRC, Rwanda, and Burundi were welcomed at GVTC to learn more about the context in which GVTC operates as an Intergovernmental organization between DRC, Rwanda and Uganda.
The members of the delegation were welcomed by Dr Georges Muamba Tshibasu, the GVTC Executive Secretary and then followed carefully a presentation on the mandate, the objectives, and the achievements of GVTC. Particular emphasis has been placed on cross-border collaboration between the three member countries, especially as this collaboration is facilitating effective conservation of transboundary mountain gorillas and other species living in the landscape shared by the three countries.
In the recent decades, the collaboration between the three countries has facilitated the mountain gorilla census whose number currently exceeds 1000 individuals. “I congratulate GVTC for the work it is doing”; said Ms. Maria Gonzalez Mata, before adding that “I hope that once the GVTC Treaty is ratified and the member States bring their contributions, the European Union will also support GVTC in the future”.
